Verse Annotation
Verse 1 - Our appointment and standing in the roles we are in is not purposeless; we are called to pray and intercede for all those we represent
Verse 2 - 3 - Our Christian life and walk does not only affect those we lead; neither does it affect us alone, but it affects both the Priest and the people. Hence, we are being held to a higher standard, as we may easily lead many to sin through our ignorance, as well as lead many to salvation by living according to the Word
Verse 4 - We do not call ourselves into spiritual leadership over many, nor do other people call us. Only God has the power to call us into ministerial service. Did you heed the call?
Verse 5 - 7 - Let us not take pride in hierarchy but rather follow the example Jesus has set, for he is our High Priest from the order of Melchizedek, who received tithes from Abraham, who received tithes from the Levites, Therefore Jesus, appointed by God (v. 6), is greater than all The High Priests
Verse 8 - 11 - The perfect life of Jesus Christ encourages us to live in obedience even during suffering: “Romans 5:3-5~because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”
Verse 12 - 14 - Through the exercise of our senses in discernment and the living and practice of what the Holy Spirit has revealed to us, we grow spiritually. We have to put into practice the things we learn, the constant revelation of God’s holiness must inform our daily posture and living mantra
Reflection
Our heart posture is critical in our walk with God. A prideful heart that is hardened quickly to every word of God will not please God. The Bible tells us in Romans 8:7, “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be”. We who have been called to leadership in one way or another in the body of Christ have to hold ourselves to a higher standard, knowing that our lifestyle affects us and those we shepherd. Everything we say must be pleasing to God; everything we think or do must be pleasing to God, no matter how hard it is. Jesus set an example of perfect obedience to God, enduring all external temptations. He knows and understands our suffering, which, when endured, produces hope in the final analysis
We are called to a Christian life of growth, not stagnation, a Christian life that reflects growth not only in maturity but, most importantly, in discernment of good and evil. The more God reveals himself to us, the more we should become aware of His holiness. The more we become aware of His holiness, the more we should desire to live in purity, seeing such a high standard that can only be achieved through Jesus Christ, not through our own works or “perfect living” or speaking in tongues, but only through Jesus Christ, who in turn causes us to bear the fruits of the Holy Spirit.
Prayer
Thank you God, for your protection and guidance. We thank you for your love, mercies, and your hand that is constantly present in our lives. Father, we pray that you may renew our minds and renew our hearts, that we may not only understand your word but we may put it into practice as it enters our hearts. We pray Jesus, that you may cause us to be daily stewards of your word and gifts to us. Help us not to be so consumed by the gifts that we forget you. May we not be derailed by signs and wonders, tongues and miracles, so that we forget the point of our salvation. Hold our hands and guide us through the day, make our paths clear, and help us to live in your presence for your glory under your authority.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen
