Verse Annotation
Verse 1 - Our Understanding and wisdom ought not to come from evil or the wicked. Who do you seek counsel from?
Verse 2 - Joshua 1:8, we are commanded to keep this book of the law on our lips; fruit will inevitably grow from this. Intentionality in delighting on (in) the word of God is important, through daily meditation on it
Verse 3 - God is our source for life and resources; he enables us to be fruitful, without withering leaves, even in tough conditions.
Verse 4-5 - The wicked and those who practice evil have no solid roots, hence they are blown like the wind, even so in judgment. They bear no weight and are likened to chaff.
Verse 6 - God is cognizant of the righteous who have cast their cares unto him (Psalms 55:22), those who believe in Jesus ( John 3:16), and those who serve him intentionally ( Joshua 24:15)
Reflection
The invention of Google Maps and Apple Maps, among many travel assistance applications, has no doubt made traveling much easier than it used to be. As much as it may seem convenient, this freedom to choose the “fastest” route to your destination has come with a few conundrums. What do I mean? I often run into the same problem every time there is traffic. I want to get there fast, but I don’t know if Google Maps would give me a faster route than Apple Maps. I find myself hopping from one to the other just to see which one is faster.
In a way, our Spiritual life can be likened to this quagmire. As we are living life, we are faced with various options: to choose to do, not to do, or to remain paralyzed in inaction. If we choose to proceed with an action, we are faced with the decision to either make a right or a wrong choice with our current intelligence, which we hold to be “true”. The problem is our intel gathering is not as open source as we would like to believe. Truth is, every choice we make has been influenced by something or someone.
Our understanding of right and wrong, good and evil, wicked and righteous, has been skewed by secular philosophy that keeps changing every day. David writes this Psalm, reminding and encouraging us of the Laws of God and the realities of the Kingdom of God.
As believers and those God is currently working in their hearts, we should not be running to the world or systems for counsel on how we should please God. We know those in our friend groups who have no liking for the things of God: those who sin continuously. Why should we go to the wicked to seek understanding for the righteous? This is a self-defeating machine. Instead, we are called to meditate on God’s word daily, that we may delight in it. It is important not to allow your feelings to dictate when and where or how you delight and meditate on God’s word. Be persistent, consistent, and disciplined, and your feelings will follow along.
Our God is righteous, and he will judge everyone when the day comes. Many who build their lives on counsel and wisdom from the wicked will be blown away like chaff with no substance. As the righteous are rewarded by God
PRAYER
Thank you Jesus for your Love and care for us, thank you for dying on the cross for our transgressions and imputing in us your righteousness. We pray for strength in zeal to pursue your Word at all times and to seek counsel from the righteous: the brothers and sisters you have put around us. Help us to delight in you
In Jesus name, Amen
